Haoshoku Haki - Conquerors' Will

Monkey D. Luffy  (by Josh Ziregbe)
This is 2018 and one thing is certain, you want to make it to the end but not just make it, you want to end at the top.

This is Monkey D. Luffy the Captain of the Straw Hat pirates, a crew of only nine members with unique strengths and a very tight bond, but he is not just a captain and I believe one thing is certain, he will become the King - Kaizoku-ou!

To not just make it but make it to the top, there is one thing that has to be resolute, unyielding and as real as the air you breathe and that has to be your will. Your will must be hungry to conquer and it's only ambition must be to be king (or queen).

In the One Piece series, a person's strength can be an expression of his or her will and the stronger the resolve the more unimaginable the things that can be achieved. Now, Haoshoku Haki is an innate ability that only a few are born with, it is the ability to subdue others solely by one's willpower and that is why it is called the Conqueror's Will or the King's Disposition. Innate though it may be, this great power has to awoken and it will certainly never guarantee victory, victory must always be earned.

Mugiwara no Luffy is a name that I am all too familiar with, a pseudonym that comes from the fact that this young man always wears his infamous hat, it's translation: Straw Hat Luffy. His appearance may portray weakness; his ability may, at first sight, appear useless; and even his brain may at times, appear broken; but one thing is certain and that is this: Luffy is tenacious!

As care free as he may be, once determined, he never gives up! This is why I am certain that he will become the PIRATE KING.

Despite the heights that he has taken the abilities of the gomu-gomu no mi (rubber fruit) to, one of Luffy's most powerful qualities is not 'gear second, third or fourth' but his ability to subconsciously pass on his stupidity/bravery. This subliminal quality is so strong that even the weakest and most cowardly members of his crew: Chopper, Nami and Ussop now display his bravery, standing against the most daunting opponents, granted with shaking knees.

NB: Bravery is contagious, surround yourself with wolves not sheep.

One piece has taught me a lot and has in particular reminded to never judge a book by its cover. Luffy never cares about outward appearances or circumstances when choosing his nakama - crew - but looks deeper, beyond the surface. To be honest, the crew members that I approved of are Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Chopper and Robbin but Ussop, Frankie and especially Brooke initially didn't hit it right with me. However, not only can I now not imagine the crew without these very strange three but I have also come to enjoy their presence.

Luffy is an extraordinary character, one that I have so much to learn from and I believe it is fitting that he be our first piece for the year. Will is what often marks the difference between success and failure and the will to never give up despite ridiculously unrealistic odds is what sets greatness apart from the rest.

We're back and we will be great!

Happy New Year from Chemical Studios.

PS: Don't be fooled by his smile, this guy is very dangerous.
